Congratulations to the Scoil Ursula football team for a great win in their third game of the Sciath na Scol. It was a great performance by everyone, with huge improvements made during the tournament.Well done all!!!!

The next orienteering event will take place on Tuesday 10th October in Doneraile Park. This will be our first competitive event of the year one of the most beautiful parks in Cork. The bus will leave at 9am and return for 1pm approx. This is open to 5th and 6th class pupils.
As always the pupils can wear their own, old clothes going to the event but must bring their uniform and a change of shoes and socks. They must also bring their lunch and plenty of water. This promises to be a fun and fast event!

The pupils from 5th and 6th class had a great day orienteering in Doneraile Park on Tuesday. The weather stayed dry and the sun was shining. Although the course was tricky and challenged the pupils, they all completed it and finished it with smiles on their faces! Liam O’Reilly was the first pupil to finish for Scoil Ursula with his teammates running close behind. I will post the results in the corridor in school but they can also be found by following this link.

The next event will be held in Fota Gardens. We hope to bring a small orienteering team of to this event. Information to follow in November.
For the month of September, we have been learning the names of the parts of the body and using this information in our Role-Play Doctor’s Surgery during Aistear.
We were delighted to welcome Doctor Saleem Ahktar Malik into our classroom on Friday to speak to the class about being a doctor and how to look after our bodies.
Doctor Saleem Ahktar Malik brought in his stethoscope and his scrubs for us to see. We all had a turn of listening to his heart through the stethoscope.
Thank you so much Doctor Saleem and Rabiyah for visiting our classroom. It was a very special day for all of us. I am sure we will have many aspiring doctors after your visit to us.
We are always looking for guest speakers to visit our classroom. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in coming to speak to the students in Junior and Senior Infants please don’t hesitate to contact us (You can use the contact form below if you like). We look forward to hearing from you. 🙂
The Junior Infant pupils have been very busy settling in to big school this September.
We are very proud of all the boys and girls who have been working very hard.
We have been learning these colours and have been searching at home and in school for things to put on our colour table.

Miss McCarthy’s toys got all mixed up. We worked hard to sort them.
We also learned about length. We measured our books using teddy bears, built tall and short towers, and compared different lengths of ribbon.
We have been busy learning Irish this month with the help of our friends Seán agus Síofra. The boys and girls have practiced the following phrases:
Cé tusa? (What’s your name?) Is mise _______ ( My name is ____)
Dia duit (Hello) Dia is muire duit (Hello)
Slán (Goodbye) Slán go fóill (Bye for now)
Tá mé ar scoil (I am in school)
We have learned two colours – dearg (red) agus buí (yellow).
Look at all the words we have learned.
Senior Infants visited us and we sang our Irish songs for each other. Click the slideshow to see some photos.
We started hurling with Pat on Tuesday. We will do hurling for 6 weeks. We wore coloured bibs and helmets and learned how to hold a hurley. We did lots of fun drills and also played a match.
Watch this slideshow of our first hurling lesson.
We read the story The Kissing Hand on our first day in school. We made our own Kissing Hands.
We also drew self-portraits. We are amazing artists!
We were very excited to read the story The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark. Every boy and girl has their own book which they will get to take home.
In History, we looked at the topic of birthdays. We made a class birthday display, and examined lots of birthday artefacts. We also celebrated Chester the Racoon’s 6th birthday.
Our Aistear theme for the month of September is The Doctor’s Surgery. This links with our oral language theme of The Body.
At the moment, we have set up three stations. 1) The Role-Play Corner 2) Playdough Area 3)Small World/Construction Area
The children are listening to and using lots of new language.
The choir sang 6 upbeat songs on the day, and featured solos and duets by Rebecca O’Reilly, Samuel Bamidele, James Kelleher and Muireann Dempsey.
The festival-goers were truly entertained by our wonderful students. Minister Simon Coveney and Lord Mayor Tony Fitzgerald were spotted tapping their feet to the beat of the songs alongside the choir on the stage. It was a memorable occasion for all and we can’t wait to sing at the next Blackrock village event.
Mrs. Keane surprised the choir members with a well-deserved hot chocolate party in the staff room. Well done boys and girls!
It’s that time of year again when Scoil Ursula hits the trails and tracks of local parks and forests to go orienteering, a fun and challenging activity for children of all abilities. The first event is open to pupils from 4th, 5th and 6th class. It will take place in the Munster Agricultural Society Showgrounds, Curaheen on Tuesday 19th September from 9.30 -12.
This is an introductory course and is non-competitive. The children will learn how to orientate and read maps, and find their way around the beautiful parks and forests of cork county. Once have experienced orienteering in Curaheen, a team of children will be chosen to compete in future events.
On the day pupils can come to school wearing old clothes and shoes that they don’t mind getting wet and muddy. Their uniforms and spare shoes and socks must be brought in their bags along with extra water and a snack. It can be a wet day out so a raincoat is a must!
Our 6th class pupils graduated from Scoil Ursula on 21st June, 2017.
The class put on a fantastic performance for parents, siblings and teachers. They performed a humorous play directed by our Speech and Drama teacher, Olive. Next, the class performed an Irish Set Dance led by Niamh-Marie and their own class teacher Miss O’Sullivan.
Each pupil was then presented with a trophy and certificate by our principal Mrs. Keane and Deputy Principal Ms. Cronin. The overall pupil of the year award was presented to Glori Lenga.
We wish the students the best of luck on the next chapter of their education. Don’t forget to come back and visit us!
