Maths For Fun has started in 1st class!! Last Thursday the 16th of March we had lots of fun playing different Maths games.

All the children got a turn at every game and everyone really enjoyed themselves.

Children played ‘Sum Swamp’ whereby they were practicing their addition and subtraction skills and ‘Tell the Time’ where all the children showed off their knowledge of the o’ clock and half past.

Mrs. Nolan had great fun getting involved in ‘Rockets and Comets’ as the children loved telling her how to play! Ms. Byrne had great fun explaining ‘Tangrams’ to the children and hiding from pictures!!!

A big thank you to the parents who helped with Maths For Fun last week.

We cannot wait for Thursday to come around again!!

Tips for Homework

Operation Transformation will start in Scoil Ursula on Wednesday the 1st of March.

All children will participate in different activities every morning for ten minutes. Activities will include: skipping, basketball games, dodgeball, playground games etc. Teams will rotate and enjoy a new activity everyday.

On Fridays all students and staff will learn a new dance taught by Ms. Byrne, Ms. Glavin and Ms. Crowley! I’m sure your child will tell you all about it!!

Let’s work together in school and at home to continue making Scoil Ursula a fitter and healthier place.

Many of the boys and girls in Junior Infants have begun creating their personal souvenir of Junior Infants.
The children, along with their parents and under the careful guidance of our Art expert, Helen, have printed one of their hand prints in clay. Next week, they will paint them black and Helen will add a special touch to each hand print. We can’t wait to see the finished product.

Week 2

The mums, dads and children painted the hand-prints black and with the help of Helen, pressed gold paint into the hand-print. Helen also wrote the child’s name and the date they made their hand-print on it.
Well done everybody!

On Thursday 8th of December, Helen and Mrs. Nolan came in and carried out an art lesson with both parents and students in fourth class. In the weeks leading up to the lesson the children collected kitchen roll. The children enjoyed the art lesson and their work is displayed in the classroom.

The children in 3rd Class have had great fun recently when parents visited their classroom on Friday mornings to play some Maths games with them.

Ms. Lemasney and the children had started learning all about Multiplication and were trying really hard to be the best in the school at their Multiplication Tables.  Thirteen parents of 3rd Class worked with Clare Hatcher in the Parents Room over the course of six weeks to find games which would help the work of the  teacher and make Multiplication easy and fun.

All of the adults tried new games and found that the children were enjoying the games so much that they forgot they were actually learning Maths!
Eileen Nolan gave each parent involved a Maths pack to use at home and it has been reported by both parents and children that it has helped at homework time. The children were sad when the Friday mornings with parents came to an end but they still have great fun working hard at Maths with their teacher.

Once again, teachers, pupils, families and community members participated in the One Book One Community reading project during September and October. The books read this year were “Dog Lost” by Ingrid Lee for classes from 3rd to 6th and “Piper” by Emma Chicester Clark for all the younger children.

Mams and Dads came to the classrooms for Art & Craft sessions, workstations based on “Piper”  and to hear all about caring for dogs. It is so nice when the adults join the children in school.one-book-8

1st class had a very exciting day today as Auntie Poppy came to visit us. However, she did not come alone, Ed was with her! We all had great fun listening to Ed and Auntie Poppy.

Ed is fantastic at telling stories!. Many children got to join Ed and Auntie Poppy at the top of the classroom and help Ed decide what rooms were in his house. The children were great at explaining to Ed what items you would find in each room.  Ed loved talking about his house today!

Ed set the children a task of creating their own house and we all had great fun doing this. The children’s houses are hanging up outside their classroom for anyone to come and see. I’m sure they would only love to describe their house to anyone who comes along.

Happy Talk

Junior Infants in Scoil Ursula are very lucky to have the wonderful people of Happy Talk working with us this year.

We are half way through our Happy Talk sessions for Term 1 and we are working hard on our language and communication skills.

Our mums, dads and helpers have been working on Modelling and Expanding with us. These are very important skills that will help improve the way we communicate.

img_2635

We have been working extremely hard on our listening skills with the help of Nibbles. We are excellent at spotting when Nibbles is not showing us his listening skills.

Our listening skills are:

Eyes are looking.

Ears are listening.

Mouth is closed.

Hands are still.

Feet are on the floor.

We can practice these skills at home and in school.

Thank you to our adults and Niamh from Happy Talk for coming into our classroom every week!
